Velocity of Sound Apparatus

Model Number: MTW-09

The Velocity of Sound Apparatus is a compact acoustics system designed for measuring the velocity of sound in air and investigating standing-wave phenomena. Micro Technologies supplies the apparatus with an audio signal generator, loudspeaker, microphone arrangement, reflector, and supporting measurement system. When used with a compatible dual-beam oscilloscope, the phase relationship between the speaker and microphone signals can be observed while the microphone position is varied. The distance required to produce a complete 360° phase shift corresponds to one wavelength, allowing the velocity of sound to be calculated from measured wavelength and known frequency. The reflector can also be positioned to generate standing waves so that nodes, antinodes, and amplitude variations can be investigated using the CRO.

Product Specification

The Velocity of Sound Apparatus is designed for quantitative investigations of sound propagation in air and for practical analysis of standing-wave behaviour. It provides a compact experimental arrangement in which the wavelength of a sound signal can be measured and combined with its known frequency to determine the velocity of sound.

The apparatus incorporates an audio signal generator that supplies a controlled electrical signal to the loudspeaker. The loudspeaker converts this signal into sound waves that propagate through the air toward the microphone.

A movable microphone detects the acoustic signal at different positions along the experimental path. When the speaker reference signal and microphone output are connected to a suitable dual-beam oscilloscope, their relative phase can be compared.

As the microphone is moved, the phase relationship between the transmitted and received signals changes. The distance through which the microphone must travel to produce a complete 360° phase shift corresponds to one wavelength of the sound wave.

Once the wavelength has been determined and the operating frequency of the signal generator is known, the velocity of sound can be calculated using the relationship between frequency, wavelength, and propagation velocity. This provides a straightforward experimental method for determining the speed of sound in air.

Micro Technologies also supplies the apparatus with a reflector that can be positioned to produce standing waves. The interaction between incident and reflected sound waves creates regions of maximum and minimum amplitude.

These standing-wave regions correspond to antinodes and nodes. By moving the microphone and monitoring the signal amplitude on a compatible CRO, the positions of nodes and antinodes can be identified and their spacing investigated.

The apparatus therefore supports both velocity measurement and broader acoustic investigations involving wavelength, phase difference, reflection, standing waves, nodes, and antinodes.

FAQs

What is the Velocity of Sound Apparatus used for?

The apparatus is used to experimentally determine the velocity of sound in air and investigate wavelength, phase difference, standing waves, nodes, and antinodes.

How is the velocity of sound determined?

The wavelength is measured by observing the microphone displacement required for a complete 360° phase shift. The measured wavelength is then multiplied by the known sound frequency to calculate velocity.

Why does a 360° phase shift represent one wavelength?

A complete phase cycle corresponds to one full wavelength. Therefore, the distance the microphone travels between equivalent phase positions represents the wavelength of the sound.

Does the apparatus include an audio signal generator?

Yes. An audio signal generator is included to provide the electrical signal required for the loudspeaker and frequency-based measurements.

Is an oscilloscope required?

Yes. A suitable dual-beam oscilloscope or CRO is required to compare the loudspeaker reference signal with the microphone signal.

Is the oscilloscope supplied with the apparatus?

No. The oscilloscope is not included with the standard apparatus and should be arranged separately.

Can standing waves be investigated?

Yes. A reflector is provided so incident and reflected sound waves can interact to form a standing-wave pattern.

Can nodes and antinodes be observed?

Yes. Moving the microphone through the standing-wave field produces amplitude variations that can be monitored on the CRO to locate nodes and antinodes.

What is the function of the microphone?

The microphone detects the sound wave at different positions and converts it into an electrical signal that can be viewed and compared using an oscilloscope.

Can wavelength be measured with this apparatus?

Yes. Wavelength can be determined using phase measurements or through suitable standing-wave observations.

How should the apparatus be maintained?

Keep the microphone, speaker, reflector, guide arrangement, electrical connections, and signal generator clean and dry. Check alignment and cable connections before taking measurements.

Can Velocity of Sound Apparatus be ordered in bulk?

Yes. Micro Technologies can supply bulk quantities for acoustics laboratories, physics laboratories, universities, colleges, research facilities, scientific equipment distributors, and institutional projects.
