The Melde’s Apparatus is designed for practical investigation of vibrations produced in a stretched cord. The apparatus incorporates an adjustable thin steel rod mounted in a pair of socket terminals near one end. The rod passes through an AC energizing coil and is influenced by a permanent magnet. When the electromagnetic arrangement is energized, periodic motion is produced and transferred to the attached cord.

At the free end of the steel rod, a small boss with a clamping screw is provided for attaching the cord securely. The cord can then be stretched under suitable tension so that vibrations generated by the electromagnetic system travel along its length.
