Electromagnetic Ring Launcher
Product Specification Sheet
Electromagnetic Ring Launcher
Model Number: MTME-29
The Electromagnetic Ring Launcher is a visually engaging apparatus designed to demonstrate electromagnetic induction and the repulsive interaction between an energized coil and a conductive aluminium ring. Micro Technologies supplies the apparatus with a vertically mounted copper-wire solenoid fitted with an iron core, two aluminium rings, and an adjustable collar. When the coil is energized, the solid aluminium ring is rapidly repelled upward, providing a clear demonstration of electromagnetic induction. The apparatus is designed for connection to a suitable mains supply.
Product Specification
The Electromagnetic Ring Launcher is designed to provide a striking practical demonstration of electromagnetic induction. When the apparatus is energized, a conductive aluminium ring positioned around the vertical core can be propelled upward due to the interaction between the magnetic field of the coil and the induced current in the ring.
The main assembly consists of a vertically mounted solenoid wound with thick copper wire. An iron core is positioned inside the coil to enhance and concentrate the magnetic field generated when alternating current flows through the winding.
Micro Technologies supplies two aluminium rings with the apparatus. These are positioned around the projecting iron core and allow different electromagnetic induction effects to be investigated.
The rings are supported by an adjustable collar, enabling their initial position above the coil to be set according to the experimental requirement.
When the coil is energized, the changing magnetic field passing through the solid aluminium ring induces an electric current within the ring. The magnetic field associated with this induced current interacts with the field of the energizing coil.
This interaction produces a repulsive force capable of propelling the solid aluminium ring upward. The sudden movement provides an immediate and highly visible demonstration of electromagnetic induction and the opposition described by Lenz's law.
The apparatus also enables comparison between the supplied rings. Differences in ring construction can be used to investigate how the ability of current to circulate through a conductor influences the resulting electromagnetic force.
The ring launcher is designed for operation from a suitable mains electrical supply. Because the apparatus can launch the ring rapidly and involves mains-powered electrical components, it should be operated with appropriate supervision and according to the supplied operating instructions.
Its vertical configuration, strong copper-wound solenoid, iron core, adjustable ring position, and interchangeable aluminium rings make the Ring Launcher a versatile apparatus for electromagnetic induction experiments.

FAQs
What is an Electromagnetic Ring Launcher used for?
It is used to demonstrate electromagnetic induction, induced currents, magnetic repulsion, and the principles associated with Lenz's law.
How does the Ring Launcher propel the aluminium ring?
An alternating current in the solenoid produces a changing magnetic field. This induces current in the conductive ring, and the resulting magnetic interaction produces an upward repulsive force.
What material is the solenoid winding made from?
The solenoid is wound using thick copper wire.
Does the apparatus have an iron core?
Yes. An iron core runs through the vertically mounted solenoid.
How many aluminium rings are supplied?
The standard apparatus is supplied with two aluminium rings.
What is the purpose of the adjustable collar?
The collar supports the rings and allows their initial position above the coil to be adjusted.
What happens when the coil is energized?
The energized coil produces a changing magnetic field that induces current in the solid aluminium ring, resulting in a repulsive force that launches the ring upward.
Does the apparatus demonstrate Lenz's law?
Yes. The direction of the induced current produces a magnetic effect that opposes the change responsible for producing it, providing a clear demonstration associated with Lenz's law.
Why is a solid aluminium ring launched effectively?
A closed conductive ring allows induced current to circulate around it. This induced current produces a magnetic field that interacts with the magnetic field of the energized coil.
Can different ring configurations be compared?
Yes. The supplied rings allow comparative observations of how ring construction influences electromagnetic induction and the resulting force.
Does the Ring Launcher require electrical power?
Yes. The apparatus is designed for connection to a suitable mains electrical supply.
Can Electromagnetic Ring Launchers be supplied in bulk?
Yes. Micro Technologies can supply Ring Launchers in bulk for laboratories, universities, colleges, research facilities, scientific equipment distributors, and institutional procurement.
