Product Specification
The Moment of Force Apparatus from Micro Technologies is a precision mechanics apparatus developed for practical investigation of moments, torque, equilibrium and lever principles. It allows known forces to be applied at different distances from a pivot so that their turning effects can be measured and compared.
The MT-10582 uses a graduated meter stick as the lever arm. The scale allows the distance between the pivot and the applied force to be measured conveniently, making it possible to investigate how lever-arm length influences the resulting moment.
The moment or torque produced by a force acting perpendicular to a lever is represented by:
Moment = Force × Perpendicular Distance
or
τ = F × d
where τ is the moment of force, F is the applied force and d is the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force.
The apparatus includes three knife-edge clamps that provide suitable support and loading positions along the meter stick. Their adjustable positioning allows different experimental configurations to be established.
An aluminium support provides stable positioning of the meter stick during experiments. Mass hangers can be suspended at selected distances on either side of the pivot, enabling clockwise and anticlockwise moments to be generated and compared.
The apparatus is supplied with two mass hangers and a set of slotted masses ranging from 1 g to 500 g. By varying both the load and its distance from the pivot, users can investigate the relationship between force and lever arm in a systematic manner.
For rotational equilibrium, the principle of moments states that:
Sum of Clockwise Moments = Sum of Anticlockwise Moments
This relationship can be experimentally verified by positioning known masses at measured distances on opposite sides of the pivot until the meter stick reaches equilibrium.
The apparatus can also support investigations into mechanical equilibrium, balancing conditions, torque comparison, lever action and centre-of-gravity concepts, depending on the experimental arrangement.
Manufactured and supplied by Micro Technologies, the Moment of Force Apparatus is suitable for physics laboratories, mechanics laboratories, engineering laboratories and other facilities requiring practical experiments in rotational mechanics.

FAQs
What is the MT-10582 Moment of Force Apparatus used for?
The apparatus is used to investigate moment of force, torque, lever-arm length, equilibrium and the principle of moments.
What is the formula for moment of force?
For a perpendicular force, the moment is calculated using τ = F × d, where F is the force and d is the perpendicular distance from the pivot.
What is the principle of moments?
For a body in rotational equilibrium, the sum of clockwise moments about the pivot equals the sum of anticlockwise moments.
How many knife-edge clamps are included?
The apparatus includes three knife-edge clamps for supporting and configuring the meter stick.
How many mass hangers are provided?
The apparatus is supplied with two mass hangers.
What range of slotted masses is supplied?
A set of slotted masses ranging from approximately 1 g to 500 g is provided.
Can both force and lever-arm distance be varied?
Yes. Different masses can be used to vary the force, while their positions along the meter stick can be changed to vary the lever-arm distance.
Can rotational equilibrium be demonstrated?
Yes. Known masses can be positioned on opposite sides of the pivot until the meter stick balances, allowing the condition for rotational equilibrium to be investigated.
Does the apparatus require electricity?
No. The MT-10582 is mechanically operated and requires no electrical power for standard experiments.
