The Simple Electroscope is a compact electrostatic apparatus designed for detecting the presence of electric charge and investigating fundamental static-electricity phenomena.

The apparatus uses a conical flask as its protective enclosure. A rubber stopper fitted at the top supports a metal rod while electrically separating the internal assembly from the flask.

A metal disc is attached to the upper end of the rod. This provides a convenient conductive surface to which an electrostatic charge can be transferred or near which a charged object can be positioned.

At the lower end of the metal rod are two thin metal leaves. When suitable electrostatic charge reaches the leaves, they acquire similar charges and move apart due to electrostatic repulsion.

The transparent flask allows the movement of the leaves to be clearly observed while also helping protect them from air movement and accidental contact.

The apparatus can be used with friction rods and other suitable electrostatic charge sources for experiments involving charge detection, electrostatic induction, charge transfer, attraction, and repulsion.
