Product Specification

The Van de Graaff Generator – Motor Driven is a high-voltage electrostatic apparatus designed to generate a continuous accumulation of electrical charge for experiments involving static electricity, electric fields, charge transfer, and electrical discharge.

Unlike manually operated versions, this model incorporates a motor-driven mechanism that continuously moves the internal charge-transfer belt. This provides convenient and consistent operation without requiring manual rotation.

Micro Technologies supplies the apparatus with a large metal dome approximately 180 mm in diameter. Electrical charge transported by the moving belt accumulates on the outer surface of this dome, allowing a very high electrostatic potential to develop.

Under suitable operating conditions, the generator can produce an electrical potential of up to approximately 200 kV. The high potential makes the apparatus suitable for visually impressive electrostatic demonstrations while the operating current remains low.

A discharge sphere approximately 100 mm in diameter is provided for controlled observation of electrical discharge. Bringing the discharge sphere toward the charged metal dome allows the potential difference to become sufficient for a visible spark to bridge the air gap.

The apparatus can produce a spark length of approximately 3 inches under appropriate atmospheric and operating conditions. Actual spark distance may vary according to humidity, cleanliness, grounding, dome condition, and other environmental factors.

Continuous motorized operation makes the apparatus convenient for demonstrations requiring sustained charge generation. It also allows the operator to concentrate on positioning accessories and observing electrostatic effects rather than manually driving the generator.

The Van de Graaff Generator can be used to investigate a broad range of phenomena including electrostatic attraction and repulsion, charge accumulation, electrical discharge, electric fields, conductors and insulators, and electrostatic induction.

The standard configuration is supplied with accessories for electrostatic demonstrations, expanding the range of experiments that can be performed with the apparatus.

FAQs

What is a Motor Driven Van de Graaff Generator used for?

It is used to generate very high electrostatic potentials for experiments involving static electricity, electric fields, charge accumulation, electrostatic induction, and electrical discharge.

What is the maximum voltage output?

The generator can produce a potential of up to approximately 200 kV under suitable operating conditions.

How is this model different from a hand-driven Van de Graaff Generator?

This version uses an electric motor to continuously operate the charge-transfer mechanism, eliminating the need for manual rotation.

What is the diameter of the metal dome?

The metal dome has an approximate diameter of 180 mm.

What is the diameter of the discharge sphere?

The discharge sphere has an approximate diameter of 100 mm.

What spark length can be produced?

The apparatus can produce a spark approximately 3 inches long under suitable environmental and operating conditions.

Does spark length always remain the same?

No. Spark length can vary depending on humidity, atmospheric conditions, grounding, surface cleanliness, operating conditions, and the position of the discharge sphere.

Does the generator provide continuous charge?

Yes. Its motor-driven mechanism provides continuous belt movement and therefore continuous electrostatic charge generation during operation.

Can it demonstrate electrostatic attraction and repulsion?

Yes. With suitable accessories, the apparatus can demonstrate electrostatic attraction, repulsion, charge transfer, and related static-electricity phenomena.

Can it be used for electric-field demonstrations?

Yes. The high electrostatic potential generated by the apparatus makes it suitable for various electric-field and charge-distribution investigations.

Are accessories included?

Yes. The standard apparatus is supplied with accessories for performing common electrostatic demonstrations.

Is this a high-current generator?

No. A Van de Graaff Generator produces very high voltage at relatively low current and is intended for electrostatic demonstrations rather than electrical power applications.

Can Motor Driven Van de Graaff Generators be supplied in bulk?

Yes. Micro Technologies can supply Motor Driven Van de Graaff Generators for laboratories, universities, colleges, research facilities, scientific equipment distributors, institutional procurement, and bulk requirements.
