Product Specification

The Material Kit – Solids from Micro Technologies is an educational laboratory specimen collection designed to provide students with physical examples of different solid materials for measurement, comparison and material-property investigations.

The kit includes a broad selection of woods, metals, polymers and paraffin wax, allowing different classes of solids to be studied within a single laboratory collection.

A major component of the kit consists of blocks measuring approximately 50 × 40 × 30 mm. These specimens include softwood, hardwood, paraffin wax, aluminium, iron and polystyrene.

Another group of blocks measures approximately 20 × 20 × 100 mm and includes Perspex, glass, slate, aluminium, softwood and marble. Their elongated form provides additional opportunities for dimensional measurement and comparative studies.

A lead block measuring approximately 50 × 50 × 20 mm is included, providing a high-density metallic specimen for comparison with lighter materials.

An aluminium block measuring approximately 50 × 50 × 80 mm provides a larger metallic specimen that can be compared with aluminium samples of other dimensions included in the collection.

A hardwood block measuring approximately 50 × 50 × 200 mm provides an extended natural-material specimen suitable for dimensional and material-property demonstrations.

The collection also includes a brass block measuring approximately 20 × 20 × 50 mm and an iron block measuring approximately 40 × 40 × 20 mm.

By measuring the length, width and height of suitable specimens, students can calculate their volume. Their mass can then be measured using an appropriate laboratory balance.

These measurements allow density to be determined using:

Density = Mass ÷ Volume

The variety of specimen dimensions helps students understand that an object's mass depends on both its material density and its volume. A larger object made from a low-density material may not necessarily weigh more than a smaller object made from a high-density material.

The kit is also useful for comparing natural and manufactured materials. Woods and marble can be compared with metals, polymers, glass and paraffin wax to highlight differences in physical characteristics.

Different aluminium specimens within the kit can support investigations showing that specimens of the same material retain approximately the same density even when their dimensions and masses differ.

Students can also use suitable specimens for material-identification activities by measuring density and comparing experimental values with appropriate reference data.

The Material Kit can support lessons involving properties of solids, material classification, density, mass, volume, dimensional measurement and engineering materials.

Manufactured and supplied by Micro Technologies, the Material Kit – Solids is suitable for physics laboratories, material science laboratories and educational institutions requiring a diverse collection of solid material specimens.
