The Linear Air Track with Accessories from Micro Technologies is designed to provide a low-friction experimental platform for investigating fundamental principles of mechanics and dynamics. By supplying air through a series of holes along the track, compatible gliders can move with greatly reduced contact friction, allowing motion to be studied under conditions that more closely approximate ideal theoretical models.
The MT-10538 incorporates a square-section aluminium alloy track approximately 1.5 metres long. Staggered holes along the upper surface distribute air beneath the gliders to form an air cushion during operation.
The track is supported on two light-alloy castings. One support incorporates a two-point contact arrangement, while the other provides a single-point contact arrangement to assist with alignment and leveling.
Horizontal adjustment is provided by means of a knurled screw, enabling the track to be accurately positioned before experimental measurements are performed.
Identical end caps are fitted so that air can be introduced from either end of the track. The opposite end can be closed using the supplied stopper, providing flexibility when arranging the laboratory air supply.
When connected to a suitable blower, the track provides a low-friction surface for glider movement. This allows experiments involving uniform motion, acceleration, collisions, conservation of momentum, Newton's laws and kinetic behaviour to be carried out with reduced interference from sliding friction.
