The apparatus features two different metal tracks connecting comparable starting and finishing regions. One ball travels along a relatively straight track, while another ball travels along a track that initially descends before rising toward the final position.

Two balls are released simultaneously so their motion can be compared directly. Although the straight route represents a shorter geometrical distance, the ball travelling along the lower curved route can gain speed more rapidly because it descends farther during the initial part of its motion.

As the ball descends, gravitational potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, increasing its velocity. The additional velocity gained on the lower portion of the track can allow the ball to complete its journey sooner despite travelling over a longer path.

The experiment therefore demonstrates an important mechanics concept: minimum distance does not necessarily correspond to minimum travel time.
