Product Specification

The Double Cone and Inclined Plane Apparatus from Micro Technologies provides a visually engaging demonstration of the relationship between an object's apparent motion and the actual movement of its centre of gravity.

The MT-10554 consists of a double cone positioned on a pair of inclined rails or bars that diverge from one another. When the cone is placed at the lower, narrower end of the arrangement, it appears to roll upward toward the wider end of the inclined rails.

Although the cone appears to move uphill, the experiment demonstrates that its centre of gravity is actually descending. As the rails become farther apart, the double cone settles progressively lower between them. The reduction in the vertical position of its centre of gravity allows the cone to move toward the apparently higher end of the rails.

This demonstration provides an effective way to investigate centre of gravity, centre of mass, stability, equilibrium and gravitational potential energy. It also helps explain why the visual direction of an object's motion does not necessarily indicate the direction in which its centre of gravity is moving.

The double-cone geometry plays an important role in the experiment. As the cone rolls toward the wider separation of the rails, its points of contact move outward toward larger-radius sections of the cone, allowing the central axis of the cone to move downward even though the supporting rails rise.

The apparatus requires no electrical power and can be operated repeatedly by simply repositioning the double cone. Its straightforward mechanical arrangement makes the underlying physics visible without complex instrumentation.

Manufactured and supplied by Micro Technologies, the Double Cone and Inclined Plane Apparatus is suitable for physics laboratories, mechanics laboratories, science demonstration facilities, research environments and other applications involving centre-of-gravity and equilibrium investigations.

FAQs

What is the MT-10554 Double Cone and Inclined Plane Apparatus used for?

The MT-10554 is primarily used to demonstrate centre of gravity, equilibrium and gravitational potential energy using a double cone rolling along diverging inclined rails.

Why does the double cone appear to roll uphill?

As the rails diverge, the cone fits progressively lower between them. Therefore, although its contact points move toward the apparently higher end of the rails, the centre of gravity of the cone actually moves downward.

Is the double cone really moving against gravity?

No. The apparent uphill motion is created by the geometry of the cone and rails. The cone moves naturally because its centre of gravity descends, reducing its gravitational potential energy.

What physics concepts can be demonstrated?

The apparatus can demonstrate centre of gravity, centre of mass, equilibrium, stability, rolling motion and gravitational potential energy.

Does the apparatus require electricity?

No. The MT-10554 is a completely mechanical apparatus and does not require electrical power.

Can the experiment be repeated easily?

Yes. After the cone completes its movement, it can simply be repositioned at the starting point for another demonstration.

What is the model number of this apparatus?

The Micro Technologies model number is MT-10554.
